From Sofia Airport (train or coach transfer)
1. Take the metro/subway line M4 from Terminal 2. This is the terminus station of the only line reaching the airport, which at this point is above ground. The ticket is ~€0.80 and there are ticket vending machines at the entrance. Change at Serdica station for line M2 towards Obelya. Alight at Tsentralna gara (=Central Railway Station). Catch a train for Plovdiv. However, travelling by coach is usually the better option (see next).
2. The Central Coach Station (Tsentralna avtogara) is next to the Central Railway Station. Catch a coach to Plovdiv, if your arrival time permits it: https://www.centralnaavtogara.bg/index.php#b
The coaches are faster and air-conditioned (most trains are not). The travel is approx. 2h. You can buy tickets on the day. Most coaches for Plovdiv depart from Bay 6. You need to check in any large luggage and will be given a sticker for each checked item.
From Sofia Airport by taxi
Avoid just boarding a taxi - this would usually be very expensive, as the distance is around 130km/80 mi, and rates can vary greatly. However, there are companies offering pre-booked transfers at a set price (e.g. https://sofiaairporttransfers.uk/pricing offer a transfer for up to 4 people for around €80–100 in total depending on the type of payment, and offer a live 24h chatline with a real person at the other end). Let us know your flight number and time of arrival if you want to find other participants interested in sharing a ride.
