Excursion by coach to Bachkovo Monastery (1083 CE) (€20 fee payable at registration desk)
10:00–16:30h on 11 April (coach trip from/to Plovdiv, €20 fee payable at registration desk)
We are delighted to offer a post-conference one-day excursion to the historic Bachkovo Monastery, one of Bulgaria’s most important medieval religious and cultural landmarks, set in the scenic Rhodope foothills — a region traditionally associated with the mythic figure of Orpheus.
The visit will take place on the final day of the Orthodox Holy Week, Holy Saturday, immediately preceding Easter Sunday (12 April). As this is an important liturgical occasion, there may be religious services taking place within the monastery complex during our visit. One of the traditional customs associated with this day is the distribution of decorated Easter eggs to worshippers — a symbolic gesture marking the Resurrection.
Our visit will include an entry to the Old Refectory, renowned for its remarkable 17th-century fresco cycle depicting saints, kings, philosophers and biblical scenes — a unique artistic synthesis of Orthodox spirituality and intellectual history. Participants will also have access to the monastery’s museum, which houses valuable manuscripts, icons and ecclesiastical artefacts.
At lunchtime, there will be free time to explore the lively market-style food stalls surrounding the monastery, offering traditional local dishes and sweets, or to enjoy a relaxed meal in one of the nearby restaurants (participants purchase their own food).
The excursion concludes with a leisurely stroll through the charming town centre of Assenovgrad, before returning to Plovdiv by approximately 16:30h.
