Transcultural Communication

WORK IN PROGRESS

In this student project by Victoria Jack, pre-sessional students workshopped advice that they might give to English speakers for how best to talk to people whose first language isn't English.

After some experimentation, we devised a plan to use a "split video" format in which the advice would be slightly jarring having two slightly out of sync audio tracks, making it difficult to listen to. This makes the experience a little like listening to a language you aren't familiar with.

The next stage is to "hide" the Banksy-like trigger images around the University of York's campus, perhaps as vinyl decals, perhaps as sprayed grafitti and make futture workshops and student seminars involve having to physically walk a certain route to gather all the snippets of good advice from the students.

The example above shows the "split screen" and slightly disorientating audio in effect.
