The Hunger Games is a book by American author Suzanne Collins with cover art by Tim O’Brien. The book is about a 16-year-old named Katniss Everdeen, who competes in a yearly competition called The Hunger Games. This book won many awards, such as the California Young Reader Medal, and was one of the New York Times “Notable Children Book of 2008”.
This book is definitely one of the best I have read in a while. The way the characters are so well written and all have a unique personality. The way everything is written with so much detail makes it easy to perfectly imagine exactly what is happening. This book covers some serious, mature themes, as well as some humour. One of the characters had a very sarcastic personality, and he said some pretty hilarious things at times, such as, “You’ve got about as much charm as a dead slug.” I think that is a great way to describe someone who is not very charming. This book definitely brings out a lot of emotions, because it is so well written that you can perfectly picture exactly what is happening. This book is sad, happy, scary, stressful, shocking, and exciting all at the same time. I experienced a lot of feelings while reading this book.
I was a bit confused by some of the vocabulary while reading this book, but once I figured it out it was easy to remember. The violence and gore was a bit startling at first, but I quickly got used to it. I didn’t like how minors were forced to compete in a fight to the death. It just felt very unfair and unethical.
I would recommend this book to basically anyone 13 or older, possibly younger depending on their maturity and reading level. It really depends because some people are 11 and completely fine with the gruesome topics, but there are also 15 year olds who absolutely hate it. If someone prefers graphic novels, this might not be the best choice as it has no pictures, which is normal for a book of this level. Overall, this is a great book that I recommend.
