Our leadership team works incredibly hard to create, deliver, and work every event we do inside of the academy. From creating teams to making awesome field trips there's something for everyone in our team. Being apart of Leadership will teach you how to be apart of a bigger team, work on better communication skills, give you opportunities that no one else gets offered, and introduce you to amazing new friends and people. Students lead clubs, events, activities, community projects, industry partnerships and outreach efforts. They meet directly with professionals, identify opportunities for their classmates and turn ideas into real projects.
Being in Leadership allows students to have the resources necesary to work with professionals outside of Yucaipa High School. Learning how to properly talk, communciate, and work with professionals is one of our main focuses within the team. We teach these skills early so that every student that leaves Leadership will have an easier time managing a career and handle situations outside of high school in a proper manner. To be a part of the leadership team, one must show the drive to learn and educate themselves and others, making their community a better place in the process.
We have worked with various colleges and companies, such as Cal Tech, CSUSB, East Valley Water District, Sorenson Engineering, and so many more that we continously collaborate with and learn from.
What Happens When Students Are Trusted to Lead?
The Yucaipa High School Engineering Academy demonstrates what education can look like when students aren’t simply asked, “What class do you want to take?”
Instead, they are asked:
What interests you?
What do you want to learn?
Who do you want to learn from?
What problem would you like to solve?
How can we help you make it happen?
Then students are given the opportunity, and responsibility to lead.
The result is an Academy where a student’s interest might lead to a meeting with an engineer, a university visit, an internship, an audio production, a career fair, a new industry partnership or even an engineering project thousands of miles away.
It’s amazing what an Academy can accomplish when students get to choose what they want to learn and are empowered to lead the way.
Kaden Kempton
Class of 28'
Greetings! I’m Kaden Kempton, an 11th grader at Yucaipa High School. You can usually find me pitching in around campus, whether that’s stepping up as co-captain for the Engineering Leadership team, collaborating with the South Africa crew, or diving into whatever new project catches my attention. Beyond school, I’m passionate about biking, practicing MMA, and making friends everywhere I go.
I jumped onboard during my sophomore year, so this marks my second year in the program—and it already feels like family here. Getting to roll up my sleeves and build real-world skills has really sharpened my ability to manage events, roll with changes, collaborate, and speak in front of a crowd. This environment has given my drive a true purpose, and I'm eager to see where these experiences take me next.
Greyson Lesch
Class of 27'
Hi, I'm Greyson Lesch and am a Senior at Yucaipa High School. I joined the Engineering Academy my Sophmore year after not doing any extracurriculars my Freshman year. I started by making my own social media and video production team within the academy, the Enigneering Network Group (ENG). I've always wanted to pursue film and the engineering aspects within it, which the academy as allowed me to do. Being givin the oppertuinty of being a Captain has taught me so much about being a leader and taking charge. I wouldn't have my high school experience any other way!
Class of 27'
Hello! My name is Leilani Mercado, and I am currently a senior here at Yucaipa High School. Additionally, I am a co-captain for our Engineering Leadership team, Co-president for T-bird Tech robotics and Co-president for Battle Bots. I have been a part of these teams and in the Engineering Academy for all 4 years of my high school career, and can confidently say I consider this my second home. Using hand-on approaches to learning, I have learned and practiced many soft skills that will aid me once I move on to other things, such as organization, coordination, flexibility, and public speaking. My skills, passion, and love for engineering have been nurtured and grown here, and I can't wait to see what the future holds in store.
Shiloh Soedjak
Class of 27'
Hello! My name is Shiloh Soedjak, one of this year's co-captains. I am currently a senior and am taking the Civil Engineering route through our academy. From field trips to our monthly Cohort meetings, I stay engaged in all we do, and am grateful to have gained such great leadership experience in my high school years. Starting off in sophomore year, our Engineering Academy has been a great addition to my life and has brought me some close friends and great connections. I am looking forward to continuing growing into who I am as a person and young adult in this role. Thank you kindly!
Leadership Teams
The Engineering Network Group (ENG.)was created by 26-27 Captain Greyson Lesch to have a dedicated team to manage all of Engineering Academy's socials and online engangment. With it allowed the team to create videos about events the academy does, field trips, and fun skits to promote things for the academy. ENG also creates the weekly announcements for every engineering class to show. Our goal is to have information out to everyone in a funny and enteratiaing way, while learning video production and communication skills. We also make the website you're on right now!
Academy students became involved with a community where severe drainage problems caused water to accumulate more than two feet deep in areas of the village. After heavy rains, that water could remain for more than two weeks. Students didn’t simply study the problem. They worked alongside Caltrans, Yucaipa Valley Water District and local engineering professionals to help develop a solution. The Academy helped raise approximately $10,000 to implement a drainage system, transforming an area where standing water once took weeks to disappear into one where water can now drain rapidly. The students then turned their attention to another fundamental need: access to water. A community of more than 700 people had been relying on a single water spigot. Working with community partners, Academy students helped design and construct three new water stations incorporating washing facilities and showers, providing resources that many residents previously did not have access to.
For the students involved, engineering suddenly became much more than calculations, drawings or classroom assignments. It became a way to improve someone’s life.
