Athletic Council

Hey STL

Here’s a preview of some of Athletic Council’s events that have already happened, and what is coming in the near future, here at STL! The 2018/19 sports season started out strong with a few YRAA and OFSAA wins in the fall season. The winter season came to a close with an OFSAA bronze medal win in Boys OP Medley Relay. These are just a few successes STL has had this year. Imagine what is to come in the future with all of our spring teams starting up. Not only does Athletic Council bring sports teams, but the week of March 4th to 7th, AC brought back its annual Health Awareness Week. Events included balloon keep ups, ping pong keep ups, and selling Booster Juice to the STL community. Athletic Council is busy planning the Athletic Banquet that will take place in June. We are so excited for all the events that are still to come, and hope you are too. Come support us at our events, and join the athletes of STL!

Chaplaincy

Ash Wednesday

On Ash Wednesday this year, Chaplaincy Council distributed ashes to the student body to prepare their hearts for the start of Lent. In these weeks leading up to Easter, it is crucial for students to take time to reflect on Jesus’ ministry, passion and death. The Ash Wednesday services allowed students to realize the importance of fasting and almsgiving, so that they can better emulate the perfect sacrifice Christ demonstrated on the cross, and one day share in the glory of his Resurrection.

Lenten Liturgy/Memorial Liturgy for Mr. Boland

“Returning to God’s Arms” was the theme of the Lenten liturgy held on April 10. The mass was dedicated to Mr. Boland, a beloved teacher whose loss is grieved by everyone in the STL community. Through the hard work of Chaplaincy Council and numerous student volunteers, our school gymnasium was transformed into a sacred sanctuary for mass. Father Peter Choi led the students in solemn reflection about responding to tragic death with the hope of Resurrection. The liturgy was a great way for students to commemorate the joy-filled life and legacy led by Mr. Boland, as teachers and students came forward to express how much he meant to them. On behalf of Chaplaincy Council, we would like to thank Father Peter Choi for celebrating the sacred mass, Ms. Doria and Ms. Buffa’s Choir for their musical talents, the school board trustees for their endless support, the custodians and student volunteers for helping set up the gym, and the whole student body for their silent reverence and cooperation during the liturgy. Most of all, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Boland who attended the liturgy. We hope that we were able to provide solace during this time of great sorrow, and we will continue to offer our thoughts and prayers for the repose of the soul of Mr. Boland.

Diversity and Equity

Black History Month:

In the month of February, STL recognized black history month, a month devoted to celebrating the African Canadian and American individuals who have changed the world and fought their oppression. Throughout this month, Diversity and Equity Council featured videos on the broadcast honouring famous individuals and posted literary and film recommendations, recommending works either created by black people or reflecting upon their experiences.

D & E also welcomed Tanika Riley, a motivational speaker, artist and performer, to conduct a presentation and workshop highlighting African music, culture, and history, with her team. Highly interactive and unique, this presentation emphasized how the issues faced by the black community cannot be isolated to the month of February, truly framing black history as human history.

Intramural

INTRAMURAL WEEK

Written by: Jonathan Shenouda

As a council of sports-loving, friendly, and enthusiastic leaders, we continue to dedicate ourselves to promoting inclusivity within the STL community through sports. During the month of March, we held our very first Intramural Week dedicated to supporting 360kids and the March break mission trip to Guatemala. Despite losing 2 days of the week to inclement weather, we were still able to collect over 400 items from our Sports Equipment Drive which included: balls from a variety of sports, hockey equipment, cleats, clothing, and 2 full sets of golf equipment. We are so happy that many STL students took the initiative to donate to those who are less fortunate and may not have the same access to such sports equipment. The week featured different activities each day including games like Kahoot, a basketball activity in the main hall, and a sports highlight video during lunch. Sadly, our main event, the dodgeball drop-in, was cancelled due to a snow day. Even with the snow days, our council continued to push hard and thankfully with the participation of our STL students, our first ever week-long event was a huge success. Intramural Council would like to thank our teacher advisors, as well as the STL community for participating in this memorable experience, and we hope to continue to receive their support as the year goes on.!!

Spirit Council

Spirit Council’s Valentine’s Day event was a huge success this year, with over $600 raised for the L’Arche Foundation! Over 300 roses and chocolates were sold beforehand to students who wanted to show their appreciation to their loved ones. Each student took part in a school-wide matchmaker questionnaire. When Valentine’s Day came around, students bought their matchmaker results to find out who they matched with. As well, love song music videos were played in the cafeteria to make people smile. Spirit Council would like to thank the Tech Crew and all students who donated to make this event possible.

Student Council

Pancake Tuesday

On Tuesday March 5th, Student Council hosted its annual pancake distribution at 7:30 am for the students of STL. The members of the council got together to prepare over 1500 pancakes to serve before the start of the Lenten Season of prayer and fasting. For those of the Catholic faith, Shrove Tuesday is the last chance for indulgence before 40 days of fasting. This tradition dates back to before the 15th century as pancakes were an easy way to use up eggs, milk and sugar before Lent. Student Council is proud to preserve the history of this sacred day and serve pancakes for the students to enjoy as well as celebrate the holy season that is to come.

St. Patrick’s Day Guessing Game

On Tuesday March 8, Student Council held their St. Patrick’s Day event which gave students a chance to guess how many chocolate gold coins were in the ‘pot of gold’. Each guess was a minimum $0.25 donation to the nonprofit organization ‘Art at Heart.’ This charity is dedicated to providing art programs to patients at hospitals as well as retirement homes. The student with the closest guess to the correct number was awarded with the pot of gold chocolates. Congratulations to Mary Angel Bandolin for her guess of 156.

Jeans for Teens

From April 8 to 12, Student Council had a jean drive in support of the Salvation Army. Students were encouraged to bring in gently used jeans which were brought to the chapel where they were collected. Thank you to everyone who participated in this event for a great cause!
