Music

The highlight of Spring for many of our Music students was a trip to the Big Apple! The students, conducted by Mr. Ng, participated in the Rhythms International Music Festival in New York and achieved the highest rating, Superior, for their playing. In addition to performing, the students, accompanied by supervisors Mr. Ng, Mr. Meiorin, Mrs. Shephard, and Mrs. Mastromartino visited the MET museum, Ground Zero, Times Square, Central Park and viewed two Broadway Shows. The play, Mean Girls was an audience favourite, especially when playwright Tina Fey took to the stage in a surprise visit at the end of the play!

It has been a busy Spring as well with both the Vocal and Instrumental students performing at the Music Alive Festival in Newmarket under the direction of Ms. Doria and Mr. Ng. The festival, sponsored by the YCDSB provides the opportunity for adjudication, feedback, and workshops for all music students in our Board.

Finally, the students are preparing for the annual Spring Music Concert held at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts on Tuesday April 30th at 7:00 pm. Our six bands and the Senior Choir will perform for families and staff members in a night that is a wonderful finale to a year of hard work!

Visual Arts

The Art Club is still up and running with Mr. Meiorin at the helm, every Thursday after school in room 102. They continue to work on sports related art for the Physed hallways of STL. The Sketchbook Club, which runs on Tuesdays with Mrs. Shephard is well underway, allowing students who are are art school bound, to hone their skills. Are students are welcome to both Arts clubs.

Over the years, our Visual Arts teachers have run an excellent photography program taught in grade 11 Art, teaching students to develop their own prints in the dark room. Next year however, they are moving to digital photography; with the purchase of chromebooks a new skill set will be explored. We are fortunate to have Ms. Grice who in addition to being an dedicated Art and Drama LTO at STL, is also an accomplished photographer. She will be sharing her talents with our Art teachers to prepare for next year’s move to digital photography!

Drama

Every Thursday after school the Drama Club meets to improvise, play drama games, and introduce the art to those not currently enrolled in the course. The club is run by former grade 12 Drama students who miss their beloved theatre! All are welcome.
