Learning Strategies: Skills for Success in Secondary School (GLE10/20)

The Learning Strategies course (GLE10/20) is designed for learners identified with a Learning Disability. In small classes, students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) learn skills and strategies that best support their learning style and then apply these skills and strategies to all other courses. Students are provided a broad range of opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of the curriculum and to work on assigned tasks independently, one-on-one with their teacher and collaboratively in small groups. Students will learn how to develop and apply literacy and numeracy skills, personal management skills, and interpersonal and teamwork skills to improve their learning and achievement in school, the workplace, and the community. This course helps students build confidence and motivation to pursue opportunities for success in secondary school and beyond and develops not only knowledge and skills for the learner, but also the values, attitudes, and actions that constitute a way of life rooted in the Christian call to discipleship and service.This course also helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a self-directed, responsible, life long learner who examines and reflects on one’s personal values, abilities and aspirations influencing life’s choices and opportunities.

Advanced Learning Strategies: Skills for Success After Secondary School (GLE3O/40)

The Learning Strategies course (GLE30/40) is designed for learners identified with a Learning Disability. In small classes, students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) develop skills to improve learning and personal management which prepare them to make successful transitions to work, training, and/or post-secondary education destinations. Students will assess their learning abilities and use literacy, numeracy, research, and personal-management skills to maximize their learning. Students will investigate trends and resources to support their post-secondary employment, training, and/or education choices and develop a plan to help them meet their learning and career goals. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a self-directed, responsible, life long learner who examines and reflects on one’s personal values, abilities and aspirations influencing life’s choices and opportunities.

Tutorial

This course must be recommended by the school's administrator. Decision is made in consultation with the student's Guidance Counsellor and Special Education teacher. The purpose of Tutorial is to provide students with an opportunity to complete courses independently within a smaller classroom setting and potentially work towards completing multiple credits. Typically courses are completed completed using the D2L platform. Entering this classroom environment with a positive attitude is key. Consistent work habits and attendance is crucial for students to complete as many courses as possible within the period.
