Q: Will my child have a Core Resource Teacher in high school?

A: Yes; your child will meet with the Core Resource Teacher within the first week of the new school year. This will be a first opportunity to dialogue about your child’s transition to highschool, tips for academic success and appropriate accommodations.

Q: How often will my child meet with the Core Resource Teacher?

A: Students meet with the Core Resource teacher as frequently as needed. The Core Resource Teacher will meet with your child early in the school year and establish a schedule based on his/her needs and based on the subjects for that semester.

Q: Will my child have access to his/her SEA technology?

A: Yes, the equipment is transferred from the elementary school. If the elementary school is outside of YCDSB, this equipment normally is transferred to our board office which will then ship to our school.

Q: Will my child be pulled out of class/how will (s)he be supported for his/her Special Education needs?

A: Your child will be in regular classes according to his/her schedule. If your child has an appointment with the Core Resource Teacher, (s)he would meet at that time. This meeting would be any number of reasons, such as IEP review/input, academic assessment, progress review, direct instruction, goal-setting, pathway planning, etc. The Core Resource Teacher maintains ongoing communication with students, classroom teachers, parents, Guidance and Administration and regularly tracks your child’s progress.

Q: Will my child be able to get homework/assignments support in the core room?

A: Yes; Core Resource Teachers dialogue with your child’s teachers regarding what additional supports are required to enable him/her to succeed in the given course(s).

Q: Who should I contact if my child is having academic difficulty in a particular class or subjects?

A: Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s subject teacher regarding any questions relating to the curriculum and if concerns emerge.

Q: What is the focus of the GLE courses (Learning Strategies Course)?

A: The course of the GLE courses in grade 9 is skills-building to further the student’s independence. Such skills include self-advocacy, literacy, numeracy, organization and time-management in support of academic success.

Q: Will my child receive accommodations in his/her subjects?

A: Typically, accommodations are provided in the subject classes; however, in certain instances when accommodations cannot be afforded in a class at a particular time, the Student Services Support Centre is available as an alternative setting for your child.

Q: Does having an IEP affect my child's opportunities of getting in post-secondary education?

A: No, an IEP does not have any influence over a student’s acceptance to any post-secondary institutions. It is the student’s choice to disclose whether they had an IEP in secondary.
