Orange Shirt Day – Sept. 30, 2022
Orange Shirt Day (September 30th) is a day when we honour the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada and learn more about the history of those schools. September 30th falls during the time of year when Indigenous children were taken away to residential school.
In order to commemorate this day and facilitate thoughtful engagement and reflection, the YCDSB will be providing opportunities for classes to participate in board supported live streamed presentations. Teachers will also be provided with a list of resources which can be used to support in class learning. This year we are excited to have Todd Jamison, Mim Harder and Dr David Anderson. This presentation would be appropriate for grades 3-12.
The Orange Shirt Day presentations will be offered according to the following schedule:
Time:
Length of Time:
9:30 am - 10:30 am

Recognizing that the schedules at each school may vary, we have done our best to try to accommodate these live stream presentations for all schools. The Live Stream will be recorded and available for classroom use only on Friday, September 30th. You may choose to participate with your students live from 9:30 am to 10:30 am or you can play the recorded presentation sometime later that day only.
This year we are offering an opportunity to visually show our support in our communities on September 30, 2022.
Orange Ribbons have been provided to all schools to participate in a small activity that shows our solidarity with Residential School Survivors and their families.
Material provided: Each school has been provided with 500 -1000 yards of orange ribbon depending on student population.
Activity: We are asking each student to be given a ribbon approximately 6- 7 inches in length. We are asking that all schools have their students tie their orange ribbon outside to the schools chain link fence at an appropriate time of the day.
Extension activity: As an extension to this activity your school could cut out a heart or a hand and tie it to the fence with a message “Why Every Child Matters” or even just the students names.
TWEET IT OUT: If you take a picture of your fence and Tweet it out, please tag us @IE_ycdsb with the hashtag #ECM-YCDSB
If you have any questions about this event please contact shannon.ulgiati@ycdsb.ca. Thank you for supporting Indigenous education.

On September 30, 2022, students and staff from across the York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) will commemorate Orange Shirt Day.
Staff and students are encouraged to wear orange to acknowledge the impact of the residential school system, raise awareness and honour Indigenous communities, to promote reconciliation.
In order to support learning in our schools we have collated a variety of resources to support both students and staff.
