The idea of attending college can be intimidating when you have a developmental disability, intellectual disability or other learning challenges. Inclusive Education programs (also known as Community Integration through Co-operative Education programs) at Ontario colleges give you the opportunity to experience college life and pursue postsecondary education, with courses tailored to meet your individual needs. You will learn the skills you need to be independent in your community and find employment in your chosen field.
Community Integration Through Co-operative Education (CICE) gives individuals with intellectual disabilities or significant learning challenges the opportunity to enhance their academic and vocational skills with modified programming through a variety of courses. The program includes a number of core courses common to all CICE students in topics such as interpersonal communication, job skills, self-advocacy, self-awareness and computer skills. Other courses are drawn from a variety of Durham College programs and may not come from one specific program area but a variety of programs related to a vocational field of interest.
Humber’s Community Integration through Co-operative Education (CICE) certificate program is designed to provide adults with intellectual disabilities (also known as developmental disabilities) the opportunity to experience college life, develop enhanced independence and connect with like-minded individuals. Our program is the first college program of its kind in Ontario and is a leader in building collaborative, inclusive communities that support and promote experiential and transformative learning. We want you to succeed, and we will help you to develop skills you can use at college, work, home and in the community.
Our goal is to give you opportunities to build your confidence, leadership skills and independence by getting involved with the Humber community while advocating for yourself in a supportive environment. We do this through positive role-modelling and by highlighting the unique value of each individual and the benefits that come from interacting and working with others.
In your elective courses, you will explore a wide range of vocational areas and interests. Some of the elective program areas include Culinary, Photography, Spa Management, Hospitality, Travel & Tourism, Journalism, Landscape Technician, Business, Police Foundations and many more.
This program is designed for students with diverse learning challenges who require academic accommodations and modifications. Students enhance their academic and vocational knowledge and skills in both core and integrated courses and practice this learning on field placements. Learning Facilitators modify integrated courses to students’ specific strengths and abilities, and provide accommodations, tutor and support sessions to ensure the work is challenging and achievable. Students prepare for success in entry-level work, and build independence and self-advocacy skills for adult life.
