Our Program
The Father Michael McGivney music program is an integral part of our schools vibrant arts community and culture. When electing to take music, students have the opportunity to:
Learn an instrument (Concert Band instruments, guitar)
Compete in a variety of music festivals and competitions (i.e. Concert Winds National Music Festival 2019 that took place in Ottawa, Kiwanis Music Festival 2025 that took place Feb. 19 (Band) and Feb. 26 (Choir)
Perform for various concerts (Winter Concert, Battle of the Bands, etc) and Feeder Schools!
Be a part of many extracurricular ensembles that we offer (Melodies of McGivney Concert Band, Jazz Combo, Carnatic Ensemble or Voices of McGivney Choir)

NEW - AMC 3M1 - Music For Creating- Prerequisite: None
This course, Music For Creating, emphasizes the creation and performance of music, with a great emphasis on songwriting. Students will explore music from all genres and cultures and will be able to choose if they would like to focus on vocals, guitar, piano, percussion and/or a band instrument (i.e. trumpet). They will form small ensembles and/or bands and learn about the form, structure, and essential elements of a song. Students will apply music fundamentals within the songwriting process while learning how to create music for a variety of different purposes. This course is open to all and no prior experience is required!
NEW - AMC 4M1 - Music For Creating- Prerequisite: None
This intermediate/advanced course of Music for Creating emphasizes the creation and performance of music, with a great emphasis on songwriting. Students will explore music from all genres and cultures and will be able to choose if they would like to focus on vocals, guitar, piano, percussion and/or a Band instrument (i.e. trumpet). They will form small ensembles and/or bands and learn about the form, structure, and essential elements of a song. Students will apply music fundamentals within the songwriting process while learning how to create music for a variety of different purposes at an advanced level. They will explore what it is like to be a songwriter and perform through the creation of original pieces. This course is open to all and no prior experience is required!

AMU 101- Gr. 9 Instrumental Music - Prerequisite: None
This course emphasizes the creation and performance of music at a level consistent with previous experience and is aimed at developing technique, sensitivity, and imagination. Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysis processes in composition, performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities. Students will develop an understanding of the conventions and elements of music and of safe practices related to music, and will develop a variety of skills transferable to other areas of their life.
AMU 201- Gr. 10 Instrumental Music - Prerequisite: None
This course emphasizes the creation and performance of music at a level consistent with previous experience. Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysis processes in composition, performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities. Students will develop their understanding of musical conventions, practices, and terminology and apply the elements of music in a range of activities. They will also explore the function of music in society with reference to the self, communities, and cultures. Do you enjoy Music and Scavenger Hunts? This is a new fun thing we will be adding. AMG 2O1- Guitar (Beginner) - Prerequisite: None
Have you ever wanted to play your favourite song on an instrument? Have you ever wanted to accompany yourself while singing? This introductory guitar course might be for you. This course is open to all grades and no prior experience is required, but also welcomed!
AMG 3O1- Guitar (Intermediate/Advanced) - Prerequisite: None
* This intermediate/advanced guitar course is open to all grades and taking the grade 10 guitar course (AMG2O1) is not required, but encouraged!
AMM 3O1- Music and Computers (Beginner) - Prerequisite: None
Have you ever wanted to learn how to make your own beats? Have you ever wanted to learn how to use recording software? This digital music production course might be for you! This course is open to all grades and no prior musical experience is required to enroll in this course.
AMM 4M1- Music and Computers (Intermediate/Advanced)- Prerequisite: None
*although it is recommended to take the Grade 11 Music and Computers course (AMM3O1) prior to this Grade 12 course but not necessary!
