Students who consistently demonstrate a level 4 achievement in most subject areas and demonstrate strong learning skills should apply for the AP program.
AP (preparatory) courses in Grades 9 & 10 are a package of four courses in each year, allowing for greater student choice in the rest of their schedules, whereas IB students must follow a diploma program with set required courses that limit electives.
In grade 11, AP students can choose to pursue as many or little AP or AP Prep courses as desired in accordance with their learning pathway. IB students must take a set required course in all years (it's all or nothing for IB).
Grade 12 AP students have the option to write the AP exams administered by the AP College Board. Grade 12 IB grades are determined by set external (national) and internal (school) assessments.
Complete the online application found on our school website
Students in AP Prep courses complete Academic (9/10) or University (11/12) curriculum with appropriate extensions and/or enrichments designed to prepare the student for writing the AP exams
Preparation for the exams is built into the program from grades nine through twelve
Students can expect a little more homework and course concepts covered.
A multiplier UP TO 1.05 may be applied to a course grade depending on the breadth and depth of work the student provides
E.g. a student who achieves a 90% in the course work may receive a mark up to 94.5% on their report card
(90 x 1.05 = 94.5)
There is only a one time application fee of $50.
For all AP Prep & AP courses, the final course percentage mark will be multiplied by 1.05 to arrive at the final mark. (due to the breadth and depth of work)
Yes, students are able to be part of both programs.
Students are able to select the AP course they wish to enrol in after Grade 10. They are encouraged to remain in the program and write the AP exams.
There is a cost of $130 for each grade twelve AP exam written. This exam is optional for all AP students.
Students currently in grade 9 or 10, who wish to switch from the regular stream to the AP program can apply using the same application progress listed for grade 8 students. PLEASE NOTE: Space in higher grade AP classes are very limited and are not guaranteed.
The AP course multiplier of 1.05 helps to offset the challenging course material
Different university/colleges have different algorithms when weighing courses with different course codes.
AP is a very personal choice as students will need to balance academics, extracurriculars, jobs or other responsibilities. Please discuss with your student their ability to find balance in a challenging curriculum.
