Purpose:
To experiment with a variety of watercolor techniques;
To make connections between experimenting with watercolor techniques and learning to create your own landscape watercolor.
Mid-point Reflection:
When practicing watercolor I learned a lot and I want to take a lot with me on my final watercolor landscape. An important takeaway I took from the watercolor menu was layering. I realized that watercolor painting has a lot to do with layering. When you want something to become darker you must layer the colors. For example when I wanted the color of the sky to be brighter on the 11”x15” piece I had to do many layers of blue to make it the bright blue shade I wanted. This is something that I’ll definitely want to take with me on my final landscape because I’ll need to use it when I want colors to be darker/brighter. Another thing that I want to take with me is the use of blending with water. For example, in my 11”x15” piece I had to paint the sunset in the sky. I needed to have a variety of colors in the sky but I didn’t want it to be separate blocks of colors. So I had to use multiple color gradations. I did this by using wet and wet to my advantage. I used water to blend the colors to make it look like a natural sunset. This is something that I’ll need to take with me and use a lot when working on the sky on my final piece. These are just two examples of the many things I learned and took away from the practice I had with watercolor. I learned a lot but these stood out greatly to me and are things I think I’ll be using a lot.
