Purpose: Make a slab mug that demonstrates connecting slabs securely, creating and attaching a handle, and illustrates a personal narrative. This should be done through the handle, textures, added-on features and/or glazing.
Reflection:
1. My mug is more of a nostalgic one, illustrating how my father and I used to go fishing together before we started to drift apart. Fishing was something that could be a bit calming and just reminds me of the days when I was little and didn’t have many problems. Fish I made it by adding extra clay and then carving fish gills and eyes onto it, making it more oceany and explaining the fishing part of the story. I constructed my mug slowly and added pieces of clay as I went on for add-ons. I also carved some tiny clams onto it and other ocean/features onto my mug. Since my story was about fishing and oceans, my colors were going to be a majority blue color scheme, creating various combinations of blue, adding contrast to the blues. Another part of my mug is my all-time favorite part, the handle. I wanted to create some sort of fishing rod-like mug, but I couldn’t get an idea that would work so I just make it swirly. Another thing was I added a bit of stain from the underglaze on the carved pieces, leaving more blue contrast to the mug and adding more of an “outline” effect to it. Finally, the inside of my mug was the bluebell glaze and I poured it in and as a result created a nice, smooth inside.
2. I think my mug could of adding a mini boat of people, indicating them as me and my dad, showing more of the fact this mug isn’t about just fishing, it was about me and my dad fishing. Besides that part, I probably would’ve been more careful on my blues, as I wanted a bigger contrast and had to re-glaze it in order to do that. Another thing is even though I couldn’t have had a fishing rod as my handle, I maybe could have glazed it a sort of brown with some moss green over it, showing a more fishy and natural part to it. Finally, even after all those changes, I do love my mug and besides some regrets, I think my mug came out nice.
