Spring 2023
1.
I am most proud of my pueblo and mug. My Pueblos clams/shells came out really well and those were some of my favorite things to carve. Carving as I have said previously is a process I enjoy and find it even peaceful, so carving this pueblo had me at peace and was very fun to do. Glazing it was also pretty fun and waiting for it to dry because it was fun to see the glaze come off during the carving process. The black and white after being in the kiln just added a clean and simplicity to the work and overall I am just content with the piece I’ve made.
2. We did the Acoma project which helped me understand the fundamentals of pottery really well. I found that making pots were something that took a long process from getting the clay to firing in the kiln. You need to take your time but also complete it at a steady pace. This impacted me pretty well as with my pots, I only needed to do it once and was able to maintain a strong pueblo. Learning Acoma pots helped since we did a lot of coiling and pottery this semester, and building up your pot without widening it too much is an essential skill you need to create your desired pot.
3. My goals for this semester were to create as much as I could and make sure to know my creative limits. For creativity limits, I think I learned my stop for my Pueblo pot as I had so much I wanted to do, I had no time to actually complete it. Creating the shells at first was pretty tedious but it was worth it as the final product came out amazing, letting it become simple and recognizing something as complex as the clams could be enough to make an amazing pueblo. Along with organization, I had my moments but I did pretty well at keeping everything where I knew it was. Finally, creating many products was my ultimate goal and I did indeed do that. Creating a variety of pots, rocks, and everything was my goal, and I particularly enjoyed it and loved doing Ceramics this year.
First Thoughts & Goals
I find ceramics to be like many forms of art where you can create a variety of things and have fun in the process with them. Unlike some other forms of art, ceramics can be very tedious as there's a drying process, and other things such as glazing, etc. Ceramics is a beautiful form of art just like many others and I’m excited to learn throughout this quarter. To stay organized, I like to use the reminder app and make a checklist, as I finish things I check them off. This way is very helpful for me and lets me know what I need to work on and allows me to prioritize certain things over others. I think wanting to figure out and pursue my own creativity is a large factor in what will have me work myself for this class and inspire me to make all sorts of creations. Figuring out the possibilities of my thinking will allow me to create immensely amazing creations along the way with this class and help me figure out my limits so I don’t overwork my brain helplessly. I would like to make a large variety of things, varying from pots to tiny animals to plates, etc. I want to make anything we can make in this class as I love playing around with clay.
