Final reflection
The project I'm most proud of is my slab box. I really enjoyed creating this piece and the final result turned out really well in my opinion. While creating the box, I learned new techniques to attach the lid and how to elevate certain aspects to make them appear to be sticking out. Overall, I had a very fun time creating this piece and would definitely make another one. The project that I learned the most from was definitely the pinch pot assignment. I learned how to be careful with the clay, how to smooth rough edges and bumps, to plan my glazing instead of just glazing with non plan. I'm happy I did this project at the beginning of the year because I was able to get better at all kinds of things before applying them to a bigger assignment. I think I did a good job achieving my goals of making mugs and bowls this semester. My narrative mug being the best, but I learned new ways of smoothing clay and how to be gentle to not cause cracks. Along with using my imagination to help design different patterns and ideas for my art.
First thoughts
How would you compare ceramics with other forms of art (differences, similarities, etc.)
Working with clay is much different than other kinds of art. Being able to make 3D objects rather than making drawings or taking photos can create a lot more meaning. In my opinion, creating ceramic pieces creates a bigger picture and really brings the idea to life. In ceramics, you also get to use more tools to make textures and pieces that stick out, which can make the piece more interesting.
What will you do to help yourself stay organized this semester?
To make sure I stay organized, I like to use folders or binders for all my hangouts. This helps me know where my work will be when I need it and turn work in on time if it's due. Online, I like to keep digital stickies and notes for all online assignments and classwork.
Having seen that ceramics can have all sorts of forms and surfaces, what might inspire YOU to make your work this semester?
Coming up with ideas for art pieces can be difficult, so i usually just look at what's around me and see what I can create with those images. I also enjoy taking ideas from others and making them into my own. Another way that can inspire me is thinking back on moments/ memories in my life that have meaning and creating a piece out of that.
What would you like to make or do with clay this semester?
This semester, I would like to explore the different ways I can create mugs or bowls with clay. Seeing the different kinds of poetry in stores and other shops around Maine have always been intriguing and very cool to me. Some of my other friends have also taken ceramics and created beautiful pieces of art, which inspired me to do the same.
