Stoneware, 3 ¾x3x3
Purpose:: Use a 3” x 3” post-it as a template to create a multiple-sided, lidded box out of slabs. Tie together the different sides and lid of the box with connected shapes/concepts.
Reflection: Last summer, my friends and I hiked tumbledown mountain and at the top there was a large pond with a small island that had wild blueberries on it. With this idea in mind, I knew the planning would be quite easy, as all the sides would include some form of nature. However, I still wanted to incorporate the blueberries, so I decided the handle on the top would be a blueberry. Tow of the four sides have mountains on them that wrap around each corner. The third side includes the pond at the top with the mountains wrapped around it, and finally the fourth side has many trees to visualize the hike to the top. I used water etching for the mountains to give the effect of them popping out. For the trees, I used many carving tools to give the illusion of the pine needles. I think the different textures on my box are satisfying to look at and cause people to want to look more into it. I personally enjoy looking at my box, however if I were to go back and redo something I would choose a different style top. After attaching the top, it was very difficult to smooth everything out and caused the sides to cave in a bit. I would also re-glaze the side with all the trees because I feel like it turned out messy, and it almost looks muddy.
