Purpose:
To determine where values change when light moves over an uneven surface by using a range of values to paint the different values in a realistic, monochromatic self-portrait;
To effectively communicate an image that looks like you through careful examination of the values and structure of your face.
In my opinion, I believe that some key factors needed to paint a self portrait value painting are a well-made guide and access to minuscule paintbrushes. An ideal guide shouldn’t be too complicated or too simple. You don’t need to mark every pore or freckle, but you also shouldn’t ignore every shadow on the lighter side of your face. With a good guide, though, comes some tight corners and thin lines. For those you need a thin paintbrush, which should be utilized often. There are plenty of small details you can fill in at the end, from a glint of light in the eyes to some light reflecting off of the hair. Ultimately, I believe that some of the most important factors rely on your setup more than your execution.
