Purpose:
To understand how a line can be used to create a three-dimensional form
To create a sculpture that considers balance and repetition, variety and emphasis
To consider where artists find their inspiration
On the side are two practice sculptures I created. It occurs to me now that the top one looks vaguely like a turtle. The larger photo is my final piece, which is written about below:
While most of my sculpture is made up of wide loops, the point of emphasis is a tight knot. Almost every piece of reed intersects here, all of them coming together to form a knot. It could be looked at like a pit in a peach. For variety, each loop is a different size.
Before this unit, I had a vague idea of how one can use negative space, but never really understood how much it could be utilized. Ruth Asawa in particular left an effect on me, making me think about the space between layers of my pieces. I learned that empty space can be just as important as filled space, and I tried to use that knowledge in making my sculpture.
