Name: Giorgio Morandi
Lived: 1890 - 1964
Kinds of work: Drawing, painting, copper-plate etching
Where the artist worked: Bologna, Italy
Fun facts:
Morandi only agreed to two published interviews within his lifetime
Morandi taught etching techniques from 1930 to 1956 at Accademia di Belle Arti (Fine Arts Academy)
Morandi, when drawing, used cross-hatching to shade his work. It has the effect of making the pieces look a bit like canvas, giving them a somewhat otherworldly look. There is very little motion, making everything eerily calm and still.
My group finds Morandi’s work to be impressive, though we don’t find the subjects particularly interesting. The technique is intricate and yet rough-looking when looked at all at once, which leaves quite an impression.
