Purpose:
To create a still-life drawing that demonstrates understanding of angles & ellipses in perspective, along with using a chosen and conscious mark-making technique to describe form;
To understand value by creating a good range of values between black & white to help make the objects appear 3D;
To demonstrate quality craftsmanship and good composition skills in a drawing.
There's more than three different values that are somewhat accurate to the model. I took time on the placement of each item to get them as proportionate as possible. The angles are all pretty accurate in comparison to the model. The positive and negative space is shown as you can tell what's in front of what using the shading value, there's little evidence of outlining because of the shading. My value technique was controlled scribble.
You need to use one type of shading because it gives some kind of order in the drawing, usually it should be a non living item because it works better with the name “still life” as in it being a simple object or objects that you don't think about in real life but when drawn can be beautiful. The use of shadows in important in these to show what angle the light is coming from.
I used van gogh esque techniques with controlled scribble as it makes it easy to show the different shades of light and dark
