Reading

Ready to Read Phonics Plus

Ready to Read Phonics Plus are new books that enhance the existing Ready to Read Colour Wheel series.

In order to become effective readers, students need to be able to:

  • “crack the written code” in texts

  • make meaning from texts

  • think critically about texts.

The Ready to Read Phonics Plus books focus on word recognition knowledge and skills that explicitly support children to crack the code. These books focus on decoding and sight recognition of familiar words alongside building language comprehension knowledge and skills.

Te reo Māori kupu in the Ready to Read Phonics Plus books

These books are designed specifically for Aotearoa New Zealand. The books include some te reo Māori kupu, which reflects the Ministry’s policy of including te reo in language and literacy learning.

Teachers can teach te reo Māori kupu as high-frequency words, reflecting those commonly used in school contexts, for example, ‘ka pai’ or ‘kura’. The books are designed to teach children to decode written English, so te reo Māori kupu cannot be taught phonetically using these books.

The teaching notes at the back of each book support teachers to pronounce the words correctly and prompt reading them as high-frequency words, not as words for sounding out. Each book has an accompanying audio file that models both the English code focus sounds and the pronunciation of te reo Māori kupu.

Enjoy the decodable texts together :)
