Mª DOLORES GIMÉNEZ GALLEGO - ROSA Mª MELGOSA PONS
ESCOLA LLUÍS PIQUER - PARETS DEL VALLÈS - GEP 2 - YEAR 18-19
CONTEXT
We work as English and CLIL teachers in Escola Lluís Piquer, located in Parets del Vallès.
During the second term we implemented the project “The school waste is in our hands" in 6th Primary.
Our school has got some waste containers indoors and outdoors. Unfortunately, we realised they are not being well used.
This project pretended to get our students thinking about the impact of recycling properly all their lifetimes.
VIDEO 1: SORTING OUT PROPERLY
Teacher - Students interaction
(Mª Dolores Giménez Gallego - Class 6B)
In this session we were teaching how recycle properly. We started eliciting vocabulary and we followed with different games.
VIDEO 2: WHY OUR SCHOOL IS NOT RECYCLING PROPERLY?
Teacher - Students interaction
(Rosa Maria Melgosa - Class 6A)
The students work in cooperative groups. Each member of the group has a different role. In this task, after analysing a graphic about a waste audit, they have to think, talk and write about possible reasons why our school is not recycling properly. In this video, while the speaker of each group is saying the reasons to the rest of the class, the teacher is writing them in a shared document on google classroom.
VIDEO 3: SEQUENCING THE PROCESS TO MAKE A RECYCLED PRODUCT
Students - Students interaction
The students work in cooperative groups. After watching a video about all the process to make a recycled product, each member of the group has a set of sequencing cards. First, each pupil, individually, has to try to put them in the right order. In this video, in small groups, they are comparing their sequences, discussing their results and modifying if necessary.
VIDEO 4: HOW OUR SCHOOL CAN RECYCLE PROPERLY?
Students - Students interaction
The students work in cooperative groups. Each member of the group has a different role. In this video, after analysing a graphic about a waste audit, in small groups are thinking, talking and writing about possible solutions to recycle properly.
REFLECTION AFTER IMPLEMENTATION
This portfolio is a reflection about the project implementation. Although it has been hard to design it and carry it out, we must say that the effort has been worth it. We have got the chance to do co-teaching in some of the sessions and it has been an enriching experience to learn from each other. Besides, it has been a good opportunity to practice all what we have learnt during the course.
In our planning process we tried to take into account the eight essential elements of PBL:
Significant content: Our project was based on a real school problem.
21st-Century Competencies: Our project gave to our students the opportunity to be creative, communicative, critical thinkers, collaborative workers and active learners,
Apart from that, we took into account other aspects: community engagement, cross-disciplinary learning, use of technology, students presenting and defending solutions and multifaceted assessment
In-depth inquiry: We asked ourselves “How would our students learn about recycling?” “What resources would be available to them for researching their questions about recycling?”
Driving question: We had to think about what our driving question would be in order to engage our students. (How can we recycle properly in our school?)
Need to know: Our students had the need to learn how to recycle in order to solve the driving question.
Voice and choice: We also made sure students would have the chance to choose the solutions in order to solve the problem about recycling.
Critique and revision: although we planned to have a quick feedback session into each day, we couldn’t do it in every session because of the lack of time.
Public audience: We made sure our students would have a real audience to talk about their project. We invited some City Council members, the Mayor, the Education Inspector, the Principal, the Headteacher, the Secretary, the Linguist from Maresme-Vallès Oriental, an AMPA's member and some teachers.
Finally, we just want to say that thanks to this project all the school has gained!
