On the 2nd day we go to the library.
The 1st part of the morning Mrs. De Stefano, Coordinator of the Library, describes its functioning and organization. Simona, an Italian, Geography and History teacher and passionate about literature, leads the project of the School Library.
It is a public, regional and provincial School Library that was born in 2016 on the upstairs floor. The Ministry donated a financial contribution of €10,000 to create a Digital Library and it was moved to the first floor as it is also a library opened to the neighborhood and thus has more access. The library was inaugurated with a big party and had about 4,500 copies. It currently has about 10,000 volumes cataloged and about 2,000 yet to be cataloged.
A new project to form a network of libraries was started in 2019. This library and another one in Aquila are the referents of the internal Abruzzo area.
Throughout the year, the Library organizes many activities and projects:
Librogame: Reading tournament dedicated to students aged 10 and in the first years of high school. They started it at school and now schools in Avezzano and Rome are participating. All the participants read a book by the same current author and the jury asks them questions related to the work and the author. The prize is a trip.
Il Te Letterario delle cinque: It is a literary club open to everyone.
Cineforum: Open to everyone.
Io Leggo Perché: Teachers and families donate a book in order to expand the literary fund.
Il Maggio dei Libri: Activities dedicated to literature.
Libriamoci: Reading day at school. The last one focused on fake news.
Ogni Lingua Conta: Day to give importance to all the languages of the school, students and families participate.
The School Library is preparing a document on the methodology of augmented reading. The aim of this methodology is to make reading interesting and motivating for children. It starts with guided reading, to facilitate the understanding of the texts.
The School Library wants to create different reading situations throughout the school and also outside. They try to ensure that all groups spend some time each day reading and that they attend the library regularly, but it depends on each teacher. They don't have library lessons.
The School Library teacher reads aloud books that allow them to work mainly on Itanlian language and geography.
The classification of books in the library does not follow the universal Universal Catalogin System, it is much more general.
The municipality has another regional library but it is not municipal, it is only open in the mornings and it is not intended for children.
The strong point of the library is the digital library they have. With the money from the grants they were able to buy a program very similar to ePèrgam.
Every year they pay a license to be part of a private platform in order to give access to all the students and their families to the digital library where they can find plenty of current books for children and adults that can be downloaded for a period of one month. This is the way they can bring current books free of cost to all homes.
We spent the 2nd part of the morning in a language session in the library with the 13-year-old students.
This was a session to learn how to identify the authorship of the information found and make appropriate use of it.
A theoretical introduction was given and then they had to create a design where they will have to mark which permissions they give.
They aslo had to choose any book from the library and must know how to find what use they can make of it.
They read aloud for a while by the teacher. They can get comfortable in the space. The teacher stops to reinforce difficult words, either by explaining them or using the internet resource. Reading it allows you to keep the students' attention (intonation, onomatopoeia...). In the chapter that she reads the main character of the story explains what she likes to do and when she finishes reading she asks the students to write what they like to do. Some of them read their writing aloud afterwards.
It draws attention that the teacher is always accompanied by at least one support teacher.
