On Thursday we went to the Sao Martinho do Porto primary school. Of all the schools we have seen, it is the oldest and this is noticeable in the equipment. In the building there is no space for the school library and that is why it is located in a prefabricated module outside. The problem is that since it does not exceed 50m2 and it is in a prefabricated module, the government does not take care of it and does not give any economic help. The group provides the library with books.
We were able to see how science relates to literature through a workshop given by Ana Cristina Tavares, PhD in biology from the University of Coimbra.
Ana Paula prepared a room with microscopes and a variety of plants and Ana Cristina Tavares explained and stimulated the 3rd grade students with the book A alga que queria ser flor, which she wrote herself, and which is related to the 5 kingdoms of the plant world. Afterwards, the pupils wrote on a piece of paper the 5 kingdoms starting from the plants that were in the classroom. They also had the opportunity to see the algae through the microscope.
They explained concepts that can be very complex in a very simple and experiential way that allowed the students to internalize them.
We were able to carry out this practice thanks to the relationship between the library network and the university.
In the afternoon Ana Paula took us to Alcobaça where she explained its history and we visited its Cistercian monastery, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. We were also able to visit the city library, where the librarian treated us wonderfully, and even showed us its archive.
Then we went to visit the city of Nazaré which has spectacular views and we had a very nice dinner.
It was a great experience!
