Final Reflection

We have implemented this project with 1st of ESO students in the area of music. We decided to do this level because we wanted introduce CLIL with first year students so that they get used to learn the music items in this language. Music is part of their lives and students often use this language when listening, dancing and even singing songs. ;-)

Besides, we think this project is a good opportunity to get students to know each other from another perspective, that is, their hobbies and talents. Since 1st of ESO students come from 5 different schools in our town, Cardedeu, this project helps to reinforce the new bonds among them.

After having implemented the project we can state that:

  • The activities could be easily carried out by students.

  • The topic touched the near interest of all students and they were very motivated.

  • Even though, some students still don't dare to use English as much as they could.

  • Some other students need regular feedback in Catalan so that they don't have the feeling of losing track.

We have realized that in order to implement the project next year again, we'll have to readjust the timing. They didn't have much time to prepare the presentation and they had to do the castings very quickly. Maybe if we devote more time to the project next year, we will be able to accompany the students more closely and coach them better.

The task in which students have to describe themselves in front of the coaches has worked very well because it is a field in which they feel quite confident talking in English, as they have learnt the basic vocabulary and the present simple tense at school, and they have revised it in the English lessons in 1st of ESO too, according to the compulsory curriculum. They just had to add the new words they needed to express about themselves, and since they were very motivated with the activity, they learnt them!

Music is a good way to learn English through songs. Students have had the opportunity to learn the meaning of the songs they have chosen, and so they can start feeling interested in understanding the lyrics. This is a good way to get used to translate the songs they like and try to understand them.
