Final Reflection

We aimed to implement this project with 1st of ESO students because we thought 1st of ESO would be the best option because students are new at the high school and can adapt better to CLIL. They can accept it as something "normal", and they might not be so shy to speak in English to their teachers. Thus, they can engage better. Besides, we could establish a long-term project until 4th of ESO and so analyse the results at the end of the full GEP project.

However, due to the lockdown in times of Covid-19, the implementation could only be partially carried out. We have applied CLIL Music lessons during the 2019-20 academic year, but could not accomplish the two lesson plans presented in the course, since they were prepared for the last term.

During the 1st term we tried to implement GEP through a Project called "Got Talent". Students enjoyed it a lot and started to get familiar with the use of English in Music lessons. As the year progressed, we continued using English partially and we could see how students enjoyed it most; to the extend that they even forgot we were speaking in English, because they were loving the actitivites.

In conclusion, although we have not been able to apply the lesson plans we prepared for GEP 1, during the first two terms we have introduced the English Language in some of the Music lessons and have drawn very positive conclusions.

After observing the students attitude we can confirm our first fears:

  • Students don't dare to use English as much as they could.

  • Some students need regular feedback in Catalan so that they don't have the feeling of losing the track.

But we are also happy to state that:

  • Students have welcomed the Music lessons in English very positively!

  • They have listened to the instructions in English quite patiently and have done their best to cope with the activities in this foreign language.

It is true that CLIL demands to slow down and simplify contents, and it has been a challenge when preparing the materials to find sources adapted to their English level, but we conclude that it is worth it!
