Generally the best way to parents or students to contact staff is via their email. See the document below for a list of emails.

Students might choose to use the messaging function in Google Classroom when contacting staff about a specific piece of work.

Teachers might then choose to start a Google Hangout with students, in which case, your son or daughter would receive and invite via GMail.
