Newsletter for School Children

This is a joint effort between the Life Science Departments at St Xavier's College, Mumbai, and the Sophia College for Women, Mumbai. UG students from both colleges under the guidance of faculty members handle the conceptualization, writing of articles, illustrations, layout, printing and distribution of the newsletter. The magazine is distributed to schools, especially Municipal schools, to spread scientific temper among the school-going children and appraise them about recent developments in various fields of interest.

Municipal School Visit

7 & 21 August 2019

Students of SYBSc Life Science conducted science and health awareness workshops titled ‘Microbes and Health’, ‘Brain & Behaviour’, ‘DNA to Chromosomes’ at the Worli Sea Face BMC School in collaboration with the NGO Teach for India. The hour-long sessions were conducted for over 120 school students of Std IX and X.

Popularization of Science

29 - 30 November 2019

UG and PG students of the Dept set up and manned ‘Live Stations’ at the DBT-sponsored event organized by the college. The event saw a footfall of over 300 students and staff members from schools in South Mumbai area, and the Life Science stall was well appreciated.

Foldscope Outreach Workshops

Dr. Maya Murdeshwar (along with Dr. Sujata Deshpande, Dept of Zoology) organised workshops in different schools and colleges of urband and rural Maharashtra, Karnataka and Assam as part of the DBT - Prakash Lab Foldscope Project India Phase I. Over 2000 students and teachers were enabled in the assembly and use of the paper microscope 'Foldscope'.

UGC FSSAI 'Eat Right India' Movement

13 February 2019

In accordance with the UGC notice to support FSSAI’s ‘Eat Right India’ Movement launched to commemorate 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, a poster presentation was organised in the College Woods area. Second Year BA/BMM/BMS students of the cross faculty course on 'Nutrition and Reproductive Health' displayed the posters they had created. The presenters enthusiastically created awareness among College students and staff on issues pertaining to balanced diet, a healthy and active lifestyle with adequate exercise and sleep, and on different aspects of reproductive health.
