“Biowaves 2025- Exploring the Blue Realm” is an initiative to support the Sustainable Development Goal number 14 (Life Below Water) and commemorate World Wetlands day which is celebrated on 2nd February every year.
Marine ecosystems are dynamic environments that span the vast oceans, encompassing a diverse range of habitats and life forms playing a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and regulating climate on the Blue planet. Marine ecosystems provide essential services such as oxygen production, carbon storage, and food resources, while also supporting livelihoods through fisheries, tourism, and biotechnology. However, they face significant threats due to excessive human intervention making their conservation vital for a sustainable future.
Biowaves 2025 is an attempt to highlight the recent advances in the field of marine science. Renowned scientists and marine conservationists delivered lectures and participated in discussions on pivotal topics in marine science. By bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world challenges, this symposium empowered the next generation of life scientists to explore and advocate conservation and sustainable use of marine resources.
The Department Magazine ‘Lignum Vitae’ (Tree of Life) is entirely a student endeavour supervised by staff in-charge. Students of FY and SYBSc look into the ideation, decide the theme, write and compile articles, design the layouts and handle the printing and sponsorship fund collections all by themselves. Each year brings up a unique offering with popular science articles written by our UG and PG students for all to read and enjoy.
The 13th volume of the department magazine ‘Lignum Vitae’ with the theme “Tides of Discovery” was released on 28th February 2025 on occasion of National Science Day. The magazine was released by chief guest and alumna Dr Rashneh Pardiwala, Founder CEO of the Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CERE), Mumbai.
