Writing Resources
This page contains the Xavier High School Writing Style Manual, graphic organizers to help students outline paragraphs/essays, color-coded "how to notes" which demonstrate necessary writing skills for all grades (how to write a paragraph, how to use direct evidence, etc.), and worksheets for all grades that help students break down and analyze a piece of writing. Teachers of all subjects should use these resources, as writing must be implemented across the curriculum and is an essential part of learning. Literature and English teachers should refer to these resources particularly often.
The Xavier High School Writing Style Manual
Writing is an important part of the learning process in all subjects. The Xavier High School Writing Style Manual outlines the standards for writing that Xavier teachers of all subjects will use to inform their writing instruction as well as grade student writing. This style manual also contains helpful guides and links for students as they strive to become more effective writers. The Xavier High School Writing Style Manual should be posted in every teacher's Google Classroom at the beginning of each school year for teachers and students to consistently refer back to.
Color-Coded "How To" Notes for Writing
Xavier students require explicit step by step instruction in writing. Color-coded notes which break down each step of the writing process are helpful. These notes can be projected on the board and posted in Google Classroom for students to refer back to at any time. An example of these notes is posted below, and several more examples are linked. Each of these examples complies with the steps in the Xavier High School Writing Style Manual.

Worksheets for Breaking Down a Piece of Writing
Below are worksheets for students that help them break down a piece of nonfiction writing. These can be used in any subject, though they are particularly helpful for English teachers. They are designed to have students critically evaluate (in writing) the techniques that an author uses to make their point and whether or not the author succeeds in making that point effectively. The English UBDs for each grade cover the different persuasive techniques and writing vocabulary that students study and become familiar with in those years.
Graphic Organizers
These are graphic organizers that can help students write analysis paragraphs as well as five-paragraph essays. They can be printed out, or posted as assignments in Google Classroom for students to type on.
