UBDs (Course Goals/Plans for the year)
Xavier teachers use UBD (Understanding by Design) format to plan the trajectory of their classes for the year. UBD requires teachers to set goals for which material and skills their students will master by the end of the quarter/year, and use those goals to inform their instruction. Links to the UBDs for all core classes taught at Xavier high school can be found below.

Instructional Materials
These folders contain instructional materials (Google Slides/readings/notes) that previous teachers have created.
***IMPORTANT NOTE: Xavier High School deletes the Google accounts of teachers who move on from Xavier. This means that any Google docs/sheets/slides/sites they created with that Google account will also be deleted. Teachers who create instructional material that they wish to pass on to future teachers should place the material in the folders below, and also transfer ownership of the file to principal@xaviermicronesia.org . This video demonstrates how to transfer ownership of a file.
***For English & Social Studies teachers: Actively Learn and NewsELA are great sources for free articles and texts which compliment your lessons that students can read, annotate, and answer questions in digitally. If you choose not to have students make digital accounts, you can still use these free resources by copying and pasting articles into Google Docs which can be distributed digitally on Google Classroom or printed. Videos about how to use Actively Learn and NewsELA are available on the Online Resources page of this website.

Electronic Versions of Novels for Literature Courses
These are links to PDF versions of novels, short stories, poems, and plays taught in Literature courses. A complete list of the novels taught at Xavier is linked here. Audiobooks for nearly all of these texts are available on youtube for free (just search "title of book- audio". Post a link to the audiobook in your Google Classroom so that students can listen while they read. With the exception of My Urohs and Indigenous Literatures From Micronesia, hard copies of these texts for students are in the library. The electronic versions posted here can come in handy to post on Google Classroom for students so that they can save the text on their devices, or to upload in Actively Learn so that students can annotate and work with the text digitally (video on how to use Actively Learn for students here & for teachers here).
***Actively Learn is a free online software that allows students to read, annotate, and answer questions about texts on their devices (novels, poems, articles, etc.). It allows teachers to add videos, notes for students, and questions for students to answer. Its features give teachers lots of options, however it requires an internet connection to use. Additionally, the 12th grade novels are not available in PDF format, and thus cannot be imported into Actively Learn.
12th Grade
This link is for a folder containing poetry and narrative nonfiction accounts from the 2019 anthology Indigenous Literatures from Micronesia. Citation information for the anthology can be found here.
This link is to a PDF version of My Urohs, a book of poetry by Dr. Emelihter Kihleng (Pohnpeian poet, one of the editors of Indigenous Literatures from Micronesia, and first person to publish a book of poetry in both Pohnpeian and English. Her email address is emeliki@gmail.com (she has served as a guest speaker via zoom and offered her contact info to the senior class before).
This link is to a PDF version of Coconut Ratz & Kung Fu Cowboys: Tales of a Pacific Islander's Childhood, a memoir by Dr. Joakim Peter (Xavier graduate). It could be particularly useful in the creative writing and memoir units of junior/senior English.
Novel Guides for Literature Teachers
These Google Folders contain novel guides for the Literature classes at Xavier High School. They break down which sections of novels ought to be read together, provide supplementary texts and resources, contain assessments, and outline the important points/goals from the UBD that must be addressed with each novel.
*All paper novels in the library are marked with numbers. Teachers should record which students received which number to ensure all novels are returned at the end of the unit. Students are not permitted to write in the novels (this includes their names).
*Not all novels from the Xavier High School Booklist have novel guides. Future teachers who complete novel guides should place them in the folders below, and also transfer ownership of the file to principal@xaviermicronesia.org so the novel guide will not be deleted when the teacher leaves Xavier. This video demonstrates how to transfer ownership of a file.
Assessments
These are examples of assessments (homework/quizzes/tests/projects) that teachers have given in History, English, Math, Science, Religion, and Language Classes. They can be used as templates/guides for future teachers in creating grade-appropriate assessments. Click "file" and "make a copy" to obtain your own copy of the assessment that you can edit to suit your needs.
