Welcome to Science in Room 1300. This year we will be focusing on:
Ecosystem Restoration: We will become ecologists to explore why a Rainforest in Costa Rica is failing. We will explore how organisms interact, what they need to survive, and how energy flows through an ecosystem. Students will explore digital models, analyze data, and gather scientific evidence. As a result of the exploration, students will make a scientific argument about what is causing the Costa Rican Rainforest to fail and design a restoration project to solve the problem.
Modelling Matter; Students will take the role of a food scientist to identify a potentially hazardous food dye in a food coloring mixture. Students will engage in hands-on investigations through digital and real life models to gather evidence about different mixtures. Students will explore properties that are observable and properties that are at the molecular level. Through their exploration, students will be able to develop their own model of mixtures and explain if they are stable or likely to change.
The Earth Systems: Students will discover what water resource engineers do as that investigate East Ferris, a fictional city, is having water shortages when an nearby city is not. Students will develop system models and research water systems to help them understand how water cycles work in different parts of the Earth. Students apply their knowledge to design a freshwater collection system to create a solution for the East Ferris water shortage problem.
Patterns of Earth and Sky; Analyzing Stars on Ancient Artifacts: Students become astronomers as they work with a team of archaeologists to explain recently discovered illustrations. Students explore the patterns of the sky and use mathematical thinking to make sense of patterns in the sky. Students use physical and digital models, as well as research books to figure out the cause of the stars patterns.
