Reading; Students participate in reading a trade book to explore literary concepts. Students work through novel studies involving fiction and nonfiction reading. Students additionally develop their reading skills through a rotation of partner reading, silent reading, and book discussion. Students are provided opportunity to work for AR points to demonstrate their comprehension skills.

Spelling: Students are provided with a spelling list that fits their spelling level. Students are provided with a spelling list and a spelling contract. Students are to complete any activities on their spelling contract to reach 40 pts. Every two weeks students take a test to demonstrate their spelling ability.
