Participation in the fair is voluntary; students may decide not to participate at any time or withdraw from the fair (but we encourage you to ask our mentors for help before deciding to withdraw!)
Parents or guardians must agree to be responsible for oversight and safety of students’ science or engineering projects. Parents are encouraged to assist students in identifying projects that can be conducted safely. Any project that breaks district policy, and/or local, state, or federal laws is NOT permitted
Parents should help students select a project that can be done primarily on their own with little assistance. Parents should provide oversight and act as a resource, but the students should do the work! It is okay for parents to help with preparing project presentations, particularly for younger students.
Submitting projects that aren’t of the students’ own design is discouraged. While there are many project ideas available on the internet, we encourage students to use these as a basis for designing a project of their own, rather than merely implementing something they find online.
The Virtual Fair will be accessible only to members of the Happy Valley school community. Parents/guardians are encouraged to directly share the link to the Fair with other family members and individuals important in students’ lives. Posting the link publicly or sharing via social media is not permitted.

We will be hosting the virtual science fair in Flipgrid! All registered student presenters will be provided a userid (check your email!) and can access this tool to record or upload a 10 minute video to present their projects!
Creativity is encouraged! Make a news report about your investigation, film a commercial for your engineering design, or do a demonstration!
The week of the virtual fair, Happy Valley families will be provided a password to log onto the site and view the presentations. (Watch your email for an invitation!)
Check out our handy guide to using Flipgrid, and use our "Sandbox" space to try it out before making your presentation!
The Virtual Fair is designed to be a celebration of learning-- not a competition. Student projects will be evaluated by the faculty and students from Western Washington University, and will be eligible one of the following recognitions:
Outstanding Innovation and Creativity
Outstanding Inquiry and Investigative Design
Outstanding Engineering Design
Outstanding Data Analysis
Outstanding Scientific Communication
Outstanding Real World Application or Benefit
During the week of virtual fair viewing, audience members and participants can also vote for the Audience Choice Award!
