Potential Uses (How do you use it now or how might you use it in the future?)
In my free time, I use YouTube to watch videos to relax. I can watch videos from creators from all over the world. This opens my eyes to see more about daily life from different regions or cultures. I will also Use YouTube to listen to music and ASMR(autonomous sensory meridian response). When I am doing homework or housework, I like to listen to music to make me more motivated to do my homework. I also listen to ASMR when sleeping to relax and then fall asleep. When it comes to studying, I watch Some teaching videos. For example, science, psychology, English grammar, etc. I can find suitable teaching resources on YouTube for learning.
User interface (UI) Reflection
Its design is simple. On the homepage, there are a bunch of recommended and popular videos, community information (questionnaires, pictures and messages), and short videos (within 3 minutes). A video's thumbnail and title give viewers a preview of the video's content and make it attractive to watch. You have to click to watch the video. On the mobile version, stay on the video for a few seconds and it will automatically play. You can set the video to play continuously. After watching a video, it will automatically play the next related video. The settings in the video also include adjusting the speed, image quality and subtitles.
User Experience (UX) Reflection
I like to use YouTube very much. I can watch videos anytime and anywhere, and I can achieve the effect of relaxing and learning on YouTube. If I don’t limit my viewing time, recommended videos and related videos can keep me watching. Adjusting the speed to 1.5 or 1.75 times allows me to watch more videos in a limited time. The subtitles function is also very helpful. When I watched English videos, the automatically generated subtitles were quite accurate, which made it easier for me to understand the content of the video.
Digital Wellness Considerations
YouTube is not very good for my health. I watch YouTube in a dark room at night, so the blue light from the screen makes my eyes tired. Watching videos constantly also makes it impossible for me to calm down and fall asleep. Sometimes I am about to go to bed, but I watch one video, so I watch it one after another, and finally I go to bed two hours later. The notification function on YouTube also reminds me of the channels I am subscribed to, so that I have more videos to watch that day. Spending too much time watching videos also reduces the time for interpersonal communication.
Thoughts on Accessibility (more to come on this topic next week)
It is free. Just use a Google account. It can be opened on the web or mobile app. It provides titles and subtitles in multiple languages for people around the world to watch. This feature requires someone to translate it.
Applications to Practice: How might being aware of design (UI & UX) and wellness considerations benefit you as a future teacher?
Understanding the design of user interface, user experience and health considerations will help me as a future teacher to better understand what kind of tools are more suitable for students to use. We should know that some designs are very convenient, but they may cause people to have no control over their use. This also reminds me to make good use of tools and not to let them take advantage of and occupy my time. I can not only take care of my digital health, but also teach How my students develop healthy relationships with technology from an early age.
