Instructions for adding your content:
Step 1: Choose a main page on this site (Social/Mindful, News App, Education Apps/Blog) that fits the description of your resource of choice.
Step 2: On the edit bar on the right, click on the "Pages" tab and then the ellipses next to the main page you have chosen (Example: Education Apps/Blog). Select “Add Subpage”.
Step 3: Title your page with the name of the resource and your name (See Duolingo or Instagram example).
Step 4: Use the "Insert" tab of the edit bar to create a text box. You will reflect on the potential uses, user experience (UX), user interface (UI), implications for digital wellness and accessibility for your resource (Make sure to draft these somewhere outside of Google Sites and copy them in! See below for detailed reflection prompts).
Optional Step 5: Add a photo of the resource you chose to the subpage that you have created. Feel free to replace the technology photo that shadows the title or go ahead and insert a photo directly onto the page. If you hover over the current photo you will see an option to "Change Photo", or to add another photo, use the "Insert" tab and select "Images".
*Important*: Once you are satisfied with the design of your subpage, click "Publish" in the upper right hand corner. Confirm this choice by pressing Publish again. This action will 'save' the alterations you have made to our collective site in the version history. Once everyone has completed the assignment, I will close editing and make the final site link available for you to view and reference for the rest of the quarter.
But most importantly, have fun learning how to use Google Sites! Take some time to really dive into these questions about the resource you have chosen and be sure to read what your classmates have discovered as well. This site is meant to be a collaborative resource that can help all of us understand Digital Design and Digital Wellness on a personal and professional level!
A note on selecting a resource:
Select a resource that you use often, would like to use, or that can support your future practice as a teacher. This resource could be wellness related or not, designed for education or not. Ideas for possible resources: Flipgrid, Padlet, GoNoodle, Seesaw, meditation apps, sleep trackers, social media apps, educational blogs, news apps, Duolingo or other language learning apps, Learning Management Systems like Google Classroom, etc.
Detailed Reflection Prompts:
Reflect on the User Interface (UI):
What colors or shapes do you notice? How are the elements of the interface structured? What grabs your attention? Is there sound? Does the cursor do anything cool when you click? Do you double-tap? What do you think the designers are intentional about? How did they design for you, the user?
Reflect on the User Experience (UX):
How does the UI impact your productivity? Your psychological health? Your attention span? What is convenient? What's helpful to you? How does the UI make you feel? Did you already realize certain elements of the UI made you feel this way? Or is that realization new? What did you learn about yourself after taking a closer look at the app/website/game you often use?
Reflect on how this resource might impact or support Digital Wellness:
Though Digital Well-being extends far beyond the apps we use, applications are still a great place to start when thinking about our own individual digital well-being. Do the daily apps you use benefit you? Which daily apps might be causing more harm than good for you personally? How can you model Digital Wellness to your students?
Reflect on the accessibility of the application or tool you chose:
We will be diving deeper into this topic next week, but for now, just consider the following: Is the content easy to read? If there are videos, are they captioned? Are there multiple language options? Does it work with or have a screen reader? Is it free? You may also consider checking it against Utah State University's Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool if possible.
Finally, think about the ways in which being aware of Digital Design and Digital Wellness could benefit you as a teacher?
I have posted two example pages (for Instagram & Duolingo) that you can review before beginning.
