Third graders will be using the Savvas mathematics program this year!
Students will be provided with a tremendous amount of support as they learn new skills. There are supplemental handouts and activities for every chapter that enable students to really master each mathematical concept covered.
Aside from the support that is offered, students will have hands-on experiences in nearly every lesson taught! I truly believe that students learn best by doing. We will also have some practice with real-life applications of our new-found math knowledge!
3P's Daily Math Routine:
Part 1 - Teaching a New Topic
Math begins at 12:45 each day. We begin by reading the daily goal/objective. A new math skill is modeled and students are given the opportunity to practice this skill in their table groups.
Part 2 - Math Rotations
Once the new skill is introduced, students break up into math rotations. Each rotation is approximately 7-8 minutes and students work in groups to complete various tasks. Sample rotations include working on the computer, completing workbook pages, playing math games, using white boards, and working with hands-on manipulatives. Each rotation provides students with opportunities to reach the objective being taught.
Part 3 - Wrap Up
Once our bell rings, students return to their seats. We quickly review answers to the "skills practice" page that all students completed. Students are then given the opportunity to use higher-level thinking to relate the new skill to their real life.
