It seems like the nearly four months that I spent doing the field study both in and off campus went by so quickly. I remember it was a mix of emotions because I was excited to observe in the classroom and at the same time anxious if I'll be able to do it. Thus, here I am, writing my reflection about all my experiences during FS for in and off campus.
As a group, we were temporarily assigned to Grade 3 in the Integrated Laboratory School of WVSU main under Sir Mark Erickson Maldecir as their Math teacher, and Ma’am Marivic Losabia as their Grade 3 adviser. This is for us to help facilitate the two-day celebration of Math and Science for Parent and Child Experiences (MSPACE). Also, we were able to observe inside of their classroom including their morning routine, students’ behavior, teacher’s strategies, classroom management, and maintaining a safe environment for all. Even Though we stayed for a short time in Grade 3, I enjoyed it and became aware of the realities inside a private school.
Then, in the last week of September, we were deployed at Iloilo Central Elementary School under Ma'am Yolanda Gabayeron, who handles the Grade 6 Roxas. In there, we got to face the realities of this field and at the same time acquired a deeper understanding of being a professional teacher. We got to encounter diverse kinds of students who were put in a single classroom, problems like slow readers, struggling during math, naughty students, etc., and teachers who utilized teaching methods that aligned with students’ needs. For almost 3 months of staying at ICES, I actually memorized the names or distinct characteristics of Grade 6 Roxas learners, their morning routine like doing a flag ceremony every day inside the classroom, singing of school hymn or city hymn, depEd mission, vision, prayer, and an energizer before the start of the class.
In addition, I’m grateful that Ma’am Gabayeron, our resource teacher, was always there and she always made sure that we were all included and belonged inside the classroom. She always guides us and teaches us in terms of recording scores of students and how to solve them using the Deped way. After we did our demo teaching, she gave us feedback for us to improve, also said we did a great job and did a checking of our lesson plan as well as introduced to us the LP they used in depEd. On our last day at ICES, Ma'am Gabayeron also advised us to stay humble, be sensitive to colleagues, and ask for help if we don't know as she told us that if we need help in the future, she is willing to help us in our CBAR.
All in all, I will forever treasure all my experiences at ILS and ICES and will apply all my learnings to my internship next semester and of course to the future.
