Reflections

Albert Jan Gordon

I remember my sixth-grade teacher telling me, "Ang batang may alam, may magandang bukas na nakalaan!" "So during that time, I didn't really understand what they were talking about, but those words still hit me today! A person who learns everything about his or her surroundings has many opportunities. And this subject assists me in walking in the right direction.

This subject shaped me into the person I am today. This subject taught me the proper knowledge that a person needs to learn as a pre-service teacher and a member of society. Let me describe my feelings as a pre-service teacher on this subject. First and foremost, learning new literacies helps me understand how the world works! It is wonderful that we, as students, will be able to contribute significantly to the improvement of teaching and the rights of teachers in the twenty-first century. Second, being a citizen; living in a world with different people is not as simple as you might think, and literacy is one of the factors that we require to help develop peace and diversity. How? Learning these literacies can help you break down barriers and gain knowledge to respect and become one of them. We learn about globalization and other things like proper etiquette online in this subject, which helps me become more aware of my surroundings.

We have no idea what will happen to us in the coming days. That is why it must be taught at a young age in order for them to become good citizens of their country. This is more than just a subject; it provides me with explicit learning that I can apply not only as a teacher but also as a role model in this society.

Just like "change," the only constant thing in our lives, our education system, specifically the different subject courses taught to students, is also evolving to adapt to the demands of time and society. This subject course, "Building and Enhancing New Literacies Across the Curriculum," includes different skills needed and essential to learn in the 21st century. It shapes and prepares learners to become future-proof members of society.

The different literacies I acquired on the subject will be valuable in the future, especially as a preservice teacher. It helps us fully understand how our society works and the role of every individual in this era of globalization.

Understanding emotions and feelings are also crucial to learning, having self-reflection, showing empathy, relating, and understanding others. This life aspect is significant in problem-solving and making decisions.

Preserving our environment is another way of preparing for the future. Every one of us has a vital role in ensuring the sustainability of our ecosystem. Human beings are part of the system and should stop the thought and belief that we are above and more important than other things in the environment.

One may think they are stingy or cheap, but financial literacy will change that perception. Practicability is crucial in order to manage our finances well.

The 21st century is a time of technological evolution. Many aspects of our society are now becoming digital. Even the media we used to know are evolving and adapting to the digital platform while striving to maintain their existence in the traditional form. Along with technological advancement, every individual's skills should also develop and adapt to the present demands. One should learn to use different machines or gadgets needed in their profession and identify reliable information across different media.

This subject course teaches learners different literacies and practical and critical thinking skills to survive and succeed in the 21st century.
