American Sign Language 4 is arranged for students to utilize their skills and knowledge from ASL 1, 2, and 3 in a creative and supportive environment. Students will continue to advance their communicative proficiency in the target language at the intermediate-advanced level and beyond by learning to sign more complex concepts, expanding vocabulary, and practicing conceptual accuracy in a visual-gestural environment. Spontaneous as well as teacher lead discussions will engage students in becoming comfortable in a communicative context. Students will pursue their learning by seeking out information and engaging in the Deaf Community, when possible. Students will develop their signing proficiency through a variety of thought-provoking activities and social interactions with their peers. Cross-cultural communication and cultural knowledge will be discussed in the target language at an intermediate-advanced level. This course is a culmination of student skills needed for the Seal of Biliteracy.
Students will develop their skills in accordance with the state standards for presentational, interpersonal, and interpretive modes of communication. The students will have the opportunity to engage in drill practices for everyday conversations, presentations, self-assessment of expressive work through recordings, videos, and workbook activities, with the ultimate goal being the ability to comfortably converse on the topics presented in this curriculum with members of the Deaf community as well as the signing community.
