About Creative Writing 1
Grade Level: 9-12
This course is designed to give students an opportunity to explore the genres of poetry, short story, drama, and short story as media for self-expression. We will cover various forms and techniques appropriate to these genres. The goal of this class is to help students improve their reading, listening, thinking, and writing skills while also incorporating the enabling of journal writing. I encourage students to use this class as a means to explore their own thoughts and find success in expressing these in various modes. Always be open to constructive critiques and provide the same for their classmates. Let your creativity shine through your writing!

The Writing Workshop:
Here are the steps to follow in the writing process:
EXPLORING - thinking about and planning a piece of writing. Notes, webs, lists, etc.
DISCOVERY DRAFT - getting your work down on paper without attention to matters of form, genre, or correctness.
REVISE - improving the content of your draft by adding details, being sure everything is in the right order and makes sense, cutting out what’s not needed, thinking about your lead and ending, your word choice, your sentences.
EDIT - checking your work to correct language conventions - spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.
CONFERENCE - discussion between teacher and student, student and student, or student and self regarding the content of a draft and the student’s progress toward writing goals.
BEST EFFORT DRAFT - checking and making changes on the original draft; assimilating information from your previous revising and editing work to assure that this is the best thinking, best revision, and best editing of which you are capable.
FINAL DRAFT CONFERENCE - submit your best effort draft; teacher examines it to determine if you are ready to go to a final draft.
FINAL DRAFT - your revised draft recopied neatly, typed, or computer printed.
