For me, I really thought it was beneficial to have someone to have check-ins with. It helped me stay on track and recognize where I needed to be (in my college apps). Like previously stated, I did procrastinate, so if I stayed more consistent with my writing, I would've had an easier time. I'm not sure if teachers could've done anything to help me through that though because rather than "procrastination," like I've been calling it, it was really just writers block. That was my biggest struggle, however, I've learned from it. I overcame it by just thinking about what made me excited and I ended up writing about my shadowing experience. Other that that challenge, everything was very manageable and I'd recommend this to other students. This FLEX study was also very helpful because nobody really talks about how you're supposed to go about college applications so having someone to support you through that process goes a long way.Â
I appreciated the extra time in my day to pursue intermediate Spanish work and I think it was successful in that sense. However, timing meeting was very difficult. This wasn't necessarily on the teacher or on me, but coincidently, Fridays weren't a great day to meet. Snow days, sickness, all school assemblies, and half days would constantly get in the way. I would recommend (if there was a next time), to choose a better day, but we couldn't've really predicted how many we ended up missing. Even so, I would recommend an independent study because I think it's really helpful for students to have extra time to study a subject they enjoy. They might find a new passion or make an already existing interest exceed what it was before. Like me, I realized I want to pursue Spanish, but also other languages too because I enjoy learning languages.
