I will be using the Journeys reading program on a weekly basis. This program will focus on teaching students strategies in the areas of comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar and writing. I will not be using packets in my classroom for spelling or vocabulary. My focus will be on using the graphic organizers to enhance comprehension. The students will also use passages from this program to complete writing assignments that will require evidence from text. Grammar and Spelling will be taught as part of the writing practice. The students will also complete vocabulary cards for their vocabulary words.

As part of the reading program, students will be using a close reader to practice their close reading skills. These skills will focus on:

  • Making Connections to the Text
  • Asking Questions about the Text
  • Recognizing what is Learned from the Text
  • Connecting the Text to Real Life
