The Maroons have 3 returning grade 12 players this year, Dah Soe, Bishar, and Kai.
#13 Small forward Kai Toney, is a multisport athlete with promising ambitions in the Volleyball world that directly translates to basketball's hardwood as he often leads the team in rebounding and is a top notch sniper from the mid range.
#1 Guard Dah Soe, is also a multisport athlete and can often be found on the Pitch. His endurance and tenacity playing soccer continues to lend itself well on our squad. Dah has got a great motor a pesky defender and valued member of the Maroons
#20 Small forward Bishar Mohammed, is earning his minutes continually adding to his knowledge and bag from last year's 2023/2024 squad. His length, hustle, and hunger to compete can’t be denied. Bishar has a bright upside and our coaching team is looking forward to his growth.
The Maroons have a handful of new faces to Varsity Basketball. Some familiar and new to Manitoba’s basketball landscape. To highlight a few are grade 12 #4 Coby Vitug and grade 11 #3 David Ku both creative and natural floor generals. Grade 11 #8 Shooting guard Kendal Webster and grade 12 #30 small forward Timite Nzau both comfortable and confident from within and beyond the arc. Grade 11 #6 Guard Juma Jokino packs a punch with his exciting and athletic style of play.
Still developing a style of our own for the time being we’ll be borrowing from Maroon’s of the past and continue to look and earn our buckets from defense. Call it what you want, it's been said “Maroons run and gun”!
Main goal is to continue cultivating and nurturing a winning culture by improving overall team dynamics through the reimagining of what “winning” is. Seeing the w’s in the x’s and o’s isn’t as clear cut as who’s number of points are highest after the last buzzer. To quote a line from the original “White men can’t jump” movie, “sometimes when you win you actually lose, and sometimes when you lose, you actually win”.
The 2023-2024 DMCI Maroons was the first in over 15 – 20 years of Maroons VBB history to be provincially ranked at number 1, holding the provinces top spot for several weeks. A commendable achievement for a team of undersized, often overlooked, but determined, high IQ and full of heart players from the West End. Although still undersized, this year's team is a lot deeper in talent and physical metrics. With some spill over of relentlessness, desire, and culture from our 3 returning players we look to fill the hearts of this year's squad with the winners attitude.
