Theory class meets in room A203.
The Driver’s Education theory class at West Field High School is the first portion of the program students will complete. It is a comprehensive program designed to provide students with a strong foundation in safe driving principles and prepare them for the practical components of the course. Each session lasts for either 1 hour (select morning classes during the school year), 1.5 hours (afternoon classes during the school year) or 3 hours (summer classes), totaling 27 hours of required class time. Students will be assigned a textbook and workbook at the beginning of the course, which will serve as essential tools for daily learning and skill development. The workbook is completed progressively, reinforcing the information covered in class discussions and lessons.
During the school year, afternoon classes are held every weekday except for early outs and days when school is not in session. Morning classes are held each weekday except when school is not in session. If a student misses a class, they will need to make up the time and work missed in order to pass the class.
Attendance is critical to the success of each student. While students may make up a maximum of two missed classes by attending the make-up sessions, more than two absences will result in dismissal from the theory class. All assigned coursework, including chapter questions, workbook exercises, and a final exam, must be completed before students are eligible to move on to the road and range portions of the program. Additionally, both students and a parent or guardian are required to attend a Parent Night Meeting, a vital component of the curriculum. In-person and digital options are both available, exact dates and details can be found at the website using this link. Failure to attend this meeting will prevent the student from advancing to the next phase of the program.
Students are encouraged to handle their assigned materials responsibly, as lost or damaged textbooks will incur a $50 fine. This structured and engaging theory class ensures that students are well-prepared to take the next steps toward becoming safe and competent drivers.
Cell phones are not allowed out during driver's education class. Just as they can distract a driver behind the wheel, they also distract students from learning the rules and theory of safe driving. Stay focused and give your full attention to the lesson—your safety and success depend on it! Students who are warned multiple times for being on their phone instead of focusing on the lesson will be dropped from the course.
