After successfully completing the classroom portion of the program, students will move on to the Driving Range. This portion of the Driver Education program consists of four 1.5-hour classes, totaling six hours of practice. During these sessions, students will learn and refine essential driving maneuvers, including:
Parallel Parking
3-Point Turns
U-Turns
45-Degree Parking
90-Degree Parking
Lane Changes
Hill Parking
The purpose of this program is to help students perfect the skills necessary to pass the state driving test. Instruction will be provided both in the car and from outside the vehicle. The instructor will direct students on the range, including providing guidance from an aerial viewpoint and communicating via walkie-talkie.
Range Assignments
The range schedule will be provided to students on the final day of the classroom theory portion of the class. Selection priority will be given based on age, with older students signing up first, followed by younger students. Students who have not yet completed any part of the classroom instruction will have the last priority when selecting their range time, regardless of age.
Attendance Policy
Mandatory Attendance: Students must attend all four scheduled range classes to complete the range portion of Driver Education and they must be on time.
Rescheduling: Students who cannot attend all four sessions must notify an instructor to reschedule. A $20 rescheduling fee will apply if a student misses a session, and the entire week will need to be made up, often at a much later date.
Switching Sessions: Students who wish to switch sessions with another student must first receive approval from the Driver Ed Coordinator.
Tardiness: Students who are more than 10 minutes late will not be allowed to drive that day and need to reschedule their range sessions for another week.
Safety and Compliance
Permit Requirement: Students must bring their physical learner’s permit to drive on the range. A photo or copy of the permit is not acceptable.
Crash Policy: If a student causes a crash on the driving range, they may be expelled from the Weber School District Driver Education program.
Students are encouraged to make their range sessions a priority to ensure they meet program requirements and complete the course on time. Students will meet on the south side of the school near the southwest entrance at their assigned time. Students in the first session are responsible for assisting the instructor with setting up the cones in the designated locations according to the skills being taught that day. Similarly, students in the later session are expected to assist with removing and properly storing the cones after class.
