How do I sign my student up for the program?
On the course homepage, the links to the current and upcoming sessions will be available just below the course description. Simply fill in all required fields and your student will be registered!
What if I don't want to sign my student up for the upcoming session of the program? Is there a way to sign them up for a future session?
If your student can't attend the upcoming session, please contact the program coordinator at jobudge@wsd.net for further details.
Will there be summer sessions?
Yes, there will be several different classes held in the summer. We will have classes that are just for athletes (for any sport throughout the year) as well as general classes. Registration for summer classes usually opens around March.
My student already started Driver's Ed. at another school. Can they just take the driving portion at WFHS?
No, district policy requires students to complete the entire Driver's Education program at the school where they initially enrolled. If a student wishes to participate in Driver's Education at a district school, they must complete all three components of the program—the classroom theory, driving range, and road driving—at that specific school.
Is there a morning option for the classroom portion of the program?
The availability of a morning classroom option depends on student enrollment. Per district requirements, we need at least 25 students to run a class, with a maximum capacity of 36 students per class. If at least 50 students enroll in the same session, we will split the class into a morning and an afternoon block. However, if enrollment numbers do not support both a morning and afternoon option, students who register after the class reaches the 36-student capacity will be placed on a waitlist for the next available session.
My student lost their disclosure. Where can I find all of that information?
How much is the fee for Driver's Education and how do I pay?
The course fee is $160, payable in person at the bookstore at WFHS or online on PowerSchool. Students who qualify for fee waivers can have this fee waived as well, if you aren't sure if you qualify or not contact Brandy Erickson at brerickson@wsd.net.
How long does the entire program take to complete?
On average, it takes between 2-3 months to complete the entire program from start to finish.
Why are there long wait times to get onto the Range portion of the program?
We can only have 5 vehicles being operated at a time on the range, with one student driving per vehicle. Students must complete 4 total sessions, each is 1 1/2 hours long, and we run two to three sessions per day. This allows us to get through 10-15 students per week, so some students will have to wait several weeks after they finish the classroom potion before they can get onto the range.
What do observation hours mean?
The state requires observation time where a student is in the back seat watching another student complete their driving time. This is an opportunity for you to learn from someone else's choices. You will be able to receive the feedback from the instructor and still discuss the choices needing to be made.
My student is going to miss more than 2 days of class, but the rules state that any students who will miss more than 2 days will be dropped. Are there any exceptions to this rule?
Usually no, but there have been times that certain circumstances merit an exception. Please contact the program coordinator at jobudge@wsd.net if you want to discuss this rule.
My student is already 16. Will they be given preference in being assigned range times/road driving and testing?
We do assign students to the driving range based on age, with the oldest students being assigned first, however when it comes to registering for the program it is a "first come, first serve" basis.
My student is ready to take the driving test. What are the options?
Upon completing the road driving portion of the program, students will schedule a driving test with one of our instructors. Test wait times typically range from 1 to 3 weeks, depending on the number of students awaiting testing. Students may also choose to take their driving test at the Driver's License Division (DLD) instead of testing through WFHS. However, please note that the school course fee is non-refundable, and the DLD charges additional testing fees. Testing through the DLD may occasionally provide earlier test dates, so this option usually is most beneficial for students who are already 16 and seeking to obtain their license as quickly as possible.
How late can I be to the range/road driving/skills test and still be able to participate?
Students may arrive up to 10 minutes late and still be allowed to participate in range sessions, road drives, or the skills test. If a student arrives more than 10 minutes late, they may forfeit their spot and will need to reschedule. We recommend arriving early to avoid any issues and to ensure the session runs smoothly for all participants.
I failed my first road test attempt. What can I do to improve my skills for next time?
Make sure to practice with your parents before your next test. The DLD has posted maneuver videos that you can also review to make sure you have all of the steps correct.
I passed my road test. What do I need to do next?
Either make an appointment with the DLD or go to the DLD as a walk-in to obtain your license. You will need to have your physical permit and a parent present. Your Theory/Road/Test scores will all be in the state system. If you haven't completed the Traffic Safety and Trends exam, you will need to do so before receiving your license.
Once my student has their license, is there anything else I need to know?
YES!!! Utah GDL laws are still in effect for drivers for the first 6 months that they have their license. They are not allowed to:
Drive with anyone in the car besides immediate family members (that means no driving friends around for the first 6 months!)
Drive between the hours of midnight and 5 AM
There are exceptions to these rules, all of which can be found on the DLD website.
