Leadership Roles Descriptions
Drum Major
The role of Drum Major is to be the ultimate culture leader for the band. Ultimately as a leader many of the members of the band will look to you. The Mountain Star Marching Band is a direct reflection of your own behavior, work ethic, attitude, and timeliness. Be an amazing communicator to additional leadership as well as help communicate leadership needs to the staff or directors. Be the foremost expert in what you do.
WW/Brass Captain Color Guard Captains
The captains are the next step down from the drum majors. These are our most important leaders on the field. Much like the Drum Majors these people have the ability to make or break the rehearsal. You need to be beholden to the culture of the band set on the field and stick to it. Your job on the field is not to push people to accomplish things or “whip them into shape”. It’s important to think of helping others RISE to the occasion. Some of your additional responsibilities are to help make sure props are loaded and ready to move, and help staff ensure trailers are loaded correctly. Run occasional large sectionals in a positive manner. Mentor and raise up others. Be the expert in your section on your music.
Section Leaders
Section leaders are extremely vital; these people will likely do the largest amount of rehearsal running with their sections. These people need to be musically proficient, punctual, an effective communicator, and mindful. These are also the qualities that help make a great team member. You will need to work closely with your captains to help make our band sound great. Assist your captain as needed. Help create a positive culture in which everyone can thrive.
